Personally, judging from the look on Jack's face in the episode, I don't think he quite got the purpose of it. Sure, find out about the subject, but everything back to her swimming medals and what actor she had a crush on? There was really no need for all of that.
Just my opinion, of course. :)
And yes, I think you're right...she'd seen the more experienced detectives doing it, and it looked like it worked so she did it too. But she didn't absorb it all.
