I feel rather bad about reading this as I still haven't read What Never Should Be, so I'm missing all the backstory. I've just never had time to read all the longer fics that started before I even had internet and as much as I want to read it, I don't know when I'll have the time.
That being said, I gave in to temptation and read all of this and it's brilliant! I love getting into the thoughts and feelings behind the action, and I love Jack's vulnerability and Ianto's quiet strength and understanding. Their relationship is beautifully handled.
I've never liked Gwen, so it's nice to see her treated as someone who screws up and has to deal with the consequences instead of getting off without even a reprimand. She has potential written this way to eventually develop into a decent character and I loved the scene in this part with Rhys. Throughout the show I've wondered why he stuck with Gwen, the way she treated him, but he's such a caring, encouraging, good man, I hope Gwen can appreciate how lucky she is to have him.
Also particularly enjoyed Ianto setting Gwen straight on a few things in the previous chapter - making assumptions without knowing the facts is one of her biggest failings!
One day I will get around to catching up on everything I missed, but in the meantime I'm enjoying this a lot, it's so well written and thought out. I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop.
